Ottawa County Jail Custody Scope
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division operates the adult jail. It holds people awaiting arraignment or trial, people who have not met release conditions, and people serving qualifying county-jail sentences. Local police agencies also bring people there. It is not an MDOC prison. A court commitment to state prison ends the Ottawa jail portion through transfer, not release to the community.
The official Corrections Division page links the current inmate search and VINELink notice path. The live locator is deliberately a roster rather than a historical release archive. A person can leave the displayed population for bond, recognizance, time served, sentence completion, court order, transfer, hospitalization, or death. The underlying record distinguishes those events.
- Community release
- Ottawa's physical hold ends without another named custodian immediately taking control.
- Transfer
- Custody moves to MDOC, another county, or a federal authority.
- Parole
- A state prisoner leaves secure confinement but remains under MDOC jurisdiction.
- Final discharge
- A sentence or supervision term ends, which differs from leaving the county jail.
Confirm Ottawa County Jail Release
Begin while the person is still displayed if possible. Register the exact record in VINELink for custody-event notice. After a change, preserve the alert and seek the sheriff's record. MiCOURT can supply the legal event but often not the moment jail staff completed physical release.
- Search the Ottawa live roster with the complete last name and any known optional fields.
- Match the person and Ottawa County agency in VINELink. Save a release or transfer alert with its event time.
- Review MiCOURT for bond, dismissal, sentencing, or other orders tied to the case.
- Call the jail for operational clarification when a current status is uncertain.
- Request the OCSO booking and release record with the timestamp, disposition, authority, and public transfer destination.
The full cross-system method appears in the Ottawa County released-inmate search. A missing jail result alone supports only "not currently displayed by Ottawa."
Ottawa County Jail Contact
Use the official directory for current assignments. The main jail line handles facility contact, while the listed inmate-information line can help route a current custody inquiry. Records requests go through the Sheriff's Records Unit or electronic FOIA portal, not through a commercial locator.

Ottawa Jail Release Volume
The sheriff's 2024 annual figures show how fast the jail population turns over. OCSO reported 4,527 bookings and 4,523 releases, while the average daily population was 269. Those counts do not identify any person. They explain why a current snapshot cannot preserve the many people who passed through over a year.
The OCSO annual-report summary is the source for these figures. Use a booking identifier and date when requesting an individual record, since the flow totals cannot support an identity match.
Request Ottawa Jail Release Records
Ottawa encourages electronic requests through the county FOIA portal. Written requests may also be sent by fax, mail, or delivered in person to the Sheriff's Records Unit. Give the full booked name, approximate admission, date of birth or booking number if known, and the precise existing fields sought.
| Record field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Booking identifier and booked identity | Ties the response to one custody episode |
| Admission timestamp and arresting agency | Shows when and through whom custody began |
| Charges, court, case, bond, and holds | Provides legal and custody context |
| Release date and time | Documents when Ottawa processing ended |
| Release type and authority | Distinguishes bond, court order, completion, and transfer |
| Public transfer destination | Identifies possible continued custody |
Michigan FOIA supplies a general five-business-day response framework and one possible ten-business-day extension. Fees depend on permitted actual work. OCSO says many requests cost under $10 but cannot estimate a given request by phone. Ask for an itemized estimate if the work may be extensive.
Ottawa Jail Record Retention
Michigan General Schedule 11 is a minimum retention authorization, not a promise that records remain on the public web. County-jail booking and control-center logs are listed for calendar year plus seven years. Daily count summaries, which may include admissions and releases, are listed for calendar year plus one. Housing reports also carry a shorter calendar-year-plus-one period.
Request the specific record promptly. A retention category does not decide whether a field is public, exempt, or present in the jail system. The sheriff can redact protected content or deny exempt material with the applicable basis and appeal rights.
Note: The current roster has no published released-person retention period because it displays no released rows at all.
Bond Release at Ottawa Jail
Ottawa distinguishes cash, ten-percent, and surety bonds. The jail's account and bond page identifies the lobby eXpress Command kiosk, ExpressAccount, and 866-422-6833 as transaction routes. Vendor fees vary. Some minor matters may use a standard bond, while serious cases await judicial bond setting.
Payment is not proof that all holds cleared or that release was completed. A bond release leaves the case pending and differs from dismissal, time served, or sentence completion. Reconcile the payment record, court docket, and jail release disposition.
Property After Ottawa Jail Release
The same Ottawa account page states that a remaining inmate-account balance is issued on a debit card at release. It also says an unclaimed commissary order becomes sheriff property seven days after release. These are local departure details, not proof that a release occurred by themselves.
When an account or property discrepancy must be resolved, ask for any existing release-account or property documentation that is retained and disclosable. Give the exact booking. Do not assume a payment or order date equals the recorded release timestamp.
Travel From Ottawa County Jail
Harbor Transit began a pilot serving the Fillmore Campus on July 1, 2026, scheduled through July 1, 2028. Rides are free through December 31, 2026. Scheduling is through Lakeshore Go or 616-842-3200, and the service is ADA accessible.
This is general public transit, not a discharge ride arranged by the jail. Campus service does not guarantee travel anywhere in West Olive. A rider must confirm the service area and destination before relying on it.
Where Ottawa Jail Departures Go
Use the recorded disposition to select the next system. A community release may leave a court case or probation term active. A transfer to MDOC should later appear in OTIS after state intake. A federal pretrial transfer may require the federal docket or USMS. An immigration transfer may require ICE's Online Detainee Locator.
| Ottawa departure | Follow-up source |
|---|---|
| Bond, recognizance, court order, or jail sentence complete | OCSO release record and relevant court docket |
| MDOC transfer | OTIS after intake |
| Another county | Receiving jail and its records office |
| Federal authority | Federal court, USMS, or BOP as the case stage requires |
| Immigration custody | ICE locator and field office |
A transfer between custodians is continuous custody. Use "left Ottawa County custody" when the destination is not yet verified, and reserve "returned to the community" for a supported community release.
Ottawa Jail Release Court Records
Every Ottawa criminal case begins in 58th District Court. Misdemeanors remain there, while felony cases move to 20th Circuit Court after preliminary examination or waiver. That split means one jail departure may require both dockets when the case changed court level.
Use MiCOURT to find the participating court and search by case number or participant. Read the chronological entries for bond setting, posting, dismissal, judgment, sentence, jail credit, probation, or later orders. A felony judgment committing the person to MDOC can explain why the jail roster dropped them without a community release.
The clerk holds the official record. Request the register of actions, judgment of sentence, or relevant order when the web summary is abbreviated. Pair that legal record with the jail timestamp, since an order can be signed before physical release or transfer processing ends.
Set-aside or sealed material may no longer be public. Juvenile, protected victim, medical, and security-sensitive information also remains outside the adult public workflow. Use the current official record and do not treat an old copied docket as proof that later access restrictions never took effect.
When the docket and jail record differ, compare their timestamps before deciding that either is wrong. They may mark separate stages of the same release process.
